FileOpen WebPublisher™ is a flexible toolset for encrypting PDF files and authenticating users via your Web server. Designed to plug into your existing Web infrastructure, WebPublisher is ideal for corporate environments and high-volume publishing enterprises.

The Encryptor is a standalone, multiplatform, threadsafe encryption engine that secures your PDFs in batch-mode or dynamically on your Web server via commandline, applying either 40-bit or 128-bit encryption. The Encryptor allows you to define encryption keys programmatically so that all keys are generated by and stored only on your server.

The system includes example code in Perl and ASP for a PermissionServer, which can manage access controls such as expiration, concurrent-usage limitations, and printing restrictions. The PermissionServer functionality is entirely under the control of the publisher, and may be implemented in any language on any platform. Packaged PermissionServers are available at additional cost for ASP, ASPX, JSP, and PHP.

The Client is licensed by Adobe Systems to load as a plug-in to the free Adobe Reader (as well as full Acrobat). It has a small file size (less than 200KB) and requires no installation or administrator privileges. Despite its unobtrusiveness, the client communicates via HTTPS back to your server every time a user attempts to open or print your encrypted document. This communication is lightning-fast and undetectable by the end-user. The client queries the business rules you have established on your website, authenticates the user, and opens the document seamlessly in the standard Adobe Reader.

Since its introduction in early 2002, WebPublisher has been implemented in a wide range of corporate and government Web environments. WebPublisher provides publishers with the security and flexibility you need, and the ease-of-use your end-users demand.
