FILEOPEN SYSTEMS RELEASES PUBLISHER 3.0
PDF Rights Management™ Software Brings Advanced Security Tools to the Desktop

FileOpen Systems has announced the release of FileOpen Publisher3™, a major upgrade to the company’s popular software for encrypting and controlling access to Adobe PDF files. FileOpen Publisher3™ delivers increased security, dynamic access controls, and unparalleled ease-of use to PDF document owners.

Written on an entirely new code-base, Publisher3™ is a turnkey implementation of FileOpen WebPublisher™, a powerful server system for PDF encryption and authentication. Publisher3™ brings the advanced features of the WebPublisher™ system to the Windows desktop environment, enabling publishers to manage access to PDF files from a simple user interface.

“This product is the result of popular demand for a turnkey solution based on our WebPublisher™ system,” said Sanford Bingham, president and founder of FileOpen Systems. “Publisher3™ allows publishers to visually manage their documents, users, and permissions from their desktop, with our WebPublisher™ technology as the engine running in the background.”

Hosted PermissionServer
End-user authentication and the granting of permissions are defined using the desktop application, then managed by the Publisher3™ PermissionServer, a hosted application provided by FileOpen Systems. The system does not require any server scripting or other programming on the part of publishers. All authentication and permissioning processes are invisible to the end-user.

Dynamic Access controls
As with previous versions of FileOpen Publisher, Publisher3™ enables publishers to set a variety of access controls on their PDFs, such as expiration and limited printing. The new release adds more access controls such as preventing saving a PDF to disk, combined with a communicating client plug-in which can enforce changes to a user’s permissions in real time, even after the PDF file has been delivered.

Advanced Security Architecture
Publisher3™ is based on a new security architecture in which the key to open an encrypted file and the permissions governing usage of that file are delivered by a client/server interaction with the hosted PermissionServer, rather than being delivered via an installer program and stored locally. This architecture supports business models in which user access to files is defined by identity, is revocable, and may change over time. Permission may still be granted in a form that does not require internet access.

Subscription Management Tools
Publisher3™ now enables publishers to import a list of users from their email contacts folder, place them in Document Groups according to their level of access, and automatically deliver the secured document to them by email. The email delivery option is ideal for subscription-based publications or restricting a document’s delivery to a limited recipient list within the enterprise. Of course, documents encrypted with Publisher3™ may also be distributed from the publisher’s Web site or on CD-ROM.

Seamless Integration with Adobe Reader
PDF files encrypted with Publisher3™ are native PDF and will open in any version of the Adobe Reader on Windows (XP/2000/NT) or Macintosh (OSX, OS9.2 with Carbon). The FileOpen plug-in is licensed by Adobe Systems to perform Digital Rights Management functions within Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat.

Licensing and Availability
FileOpen Publisher3™ is available as of April 14, 2006 and licensed for an annual fee of $2495 while in use. The software may be purchased directly from the FileOpen Systems website at www.fileopen.com. A fully functional evaluation version is available for publishers to test with their own documents.
