FileOpen Systems Licenses Right to Offer Digital Rights Management for Adobe Acrobat® Products

NEW YORK, New York, April 7, 2003
FileOpen Systems Inc. today announced a licensing agreement with Adobe Systems Incorporated which solidifies FileOpen's position as an authorized provider of digital rights management (DRM) solutions for Adobe® Acrobat 6.0® and Adobe Reader® software. Under the agreement, FileOpen Systems has been granted the right to distribute its authentication plug-in to interoperate with current and future versions of the freely distributed Adobe Reader. Adobe has distributed nearly half-a-billion copies of Adobe Reader, and the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) is the worldwide standard for reliable document distribution. "By continuing to support Adobe Reader, we ensure that our customers will be able to reach the widest possible audience for their publications, while protecting these publications from piracy," said Sanford Bingham, president & CEO of FileOpen Systems. "Adobe Reader is the stable platform on which FileOpen Systems has distributed its client software to millions of end-users around the world." "FileOpen Systems was one of the first Adobe development partners to build a DRM solution for Acrobat," said Sarah Rosenbaum, director of Acrobat Product Marketing at Adobe Systems. "We're pleased that as part of this agreement they have committed to continued development on our platform. Development partners, like FileOpen, are helping to grow a healthy ecosystem for Acrobat and Adobe PDF. Together we deliver significant value to our combined customers."

Encryption Tools Give Publishers Control
FileOpen Systems provides three products that add DRM functionality to Adobe PDF files. These products encrypt Adobe PDF files and allow publishers to control the opening, display and use of those files in Acrobat or Adobe Reader. Without such DRM functionality, publishers cannot prevent the uncontrolled re-distribution of their Adobe PDF content. FileOpen WebPublisherT is a server-based system that can encrypt large volumes of Adobe PDF files and allow publishers to use their own server logic and existing authentication schemes to manage access to those files. FileOpen PublisherT is a desktop program which allows an operator to encrypt Adobe PDF documents in batch mode and create installation programs through a user-friendly interface. FileOpen Publisher enables publishers to apply access controls such as document expiration and printing restrictions to Adobe PDF files. FileOpen PersonalPublisherT is an inexpensive utility based on the FileOpen Publisher platform with which authors can secure a single Adobe PDF document for distribution.
