American Institute of Physics Selects FileOpen PDF To Protect Journals on CD-ROM

NEW YORK, New York, April 19, 1999
FileOpen Systems Inc. announced today that the American Institute of Physics (AIP) Publishing Services group has produced a CD-ROM of journals using FileOpen PDF to provide selective access to the contents. The CD-ROM contains 27 journals of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and will be distributed on a quarterly basis.

"When looking for an access control solution, we chose FileOpen PDF because it provided the desired level of security on the platforms we needed to support (Windows 3.1, 95, and 98) for an affordable price," said Jerry McCarthy, Applications Developer at AIP. The ASCE CD-ROM also takes advantage of FileOpen PDF's "Smart Installer," which bundles Acrobat Reader installation all in one package, and the "Multi-Product Installer" for selectively granting access to the master journal archive.

A Streamlined Solution
"The FileOpen PDF protection was important to ASCE from a subscription standpoint," continued McCarthy. "ASCE publishes 27 different journals and wanted to fit up to one year's data for all journals on a single CD, rather than be burdened with creating 27 individual CDs, one for each journal, and the overhead that entailed."

ASCE now uses FileOpen PDF to distribute the same CD-ROM to its subscribers. FileOpen PDF installs permissions only for those journals to which a user has subscribed, and seamlessly opens those journals for subscribers without any password entry after the initial installation.

FileOpen PDF and Scientific/Technical/Medical Publishing
"We are very pleased that AIP is offering FileOpen PDF as part of its publishing services" said Sanford Bingham, president of FileOpen Systems. "FileOpen PDF was designed to meet the needs of S/T/M publishers with advanced distribution requirements, of which ASCE is certainly one. We look forward to working with AIP and its clients on future publications."

About AIP and ASCE
The American Institute of Physics (http://www.aip.org) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its application to human welfare. Using Adobe Acrobat, AIP produces archival CD-ROMs for both AIP-owned journals as well as society journals and conference proceedings.

Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers (http://www.asce.org) represents more than 120,000 civil engineers worldwide, and is America's oldest national engineering society. ASCE is the world's largest publisher of civil engineering information, with 27 journals including the Journal of Structural Engineering, the Journal of Environmental Engineering, and the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering.
