FileOpen Systems Releases FileOpen PDF 2.0
NEW YORK, NY -- March 17, 1998
FileOpen Systems Inc., the leading developer of secure publishing software
for PDF, today announced the availability of FileOpen PDF 2.0 at Seybold
Seminars Publishing 98 in New York City.
FileOpen PDF 2.0 is a complete environment for securing and placing access
parameters on PDF files, for secure and seamless distribution to users
on the Internet and CD-ROM.
"This new release is the result of our listening to the specific needs
of the PDF publishing marketplace, as well as integrating the latest in
copyright protection technology," said Sanford Bingham, president of FileOpen
Systems. "We're pleased to be the first company to provide PDF publishers
with a feature-rich, easy-to-use, and reliable solution for secure publishing."
New features
FileOpen PDF 2.0 includes several new features in the authoring component,
the FileOpen PDF Publisher. In addition to placing encryption and usage
restrictions on directories of files in batch mode, publishers can now
set expiration times on documents, enter Digital Object Identifiers and
other tracking information, lock documents to specific media, and create
an installer for their publication with one mouse-click.
On the client side, the FileOpen plug-in for Adobe Acrobat is an invisible
authentication layer on the end-user's machine. Authorized users never
have to enter any passwords; documents open seamlessly inside of Acrobat
Exchange and Reader. But once the document has expired or is copied to
an unauthorized user's machine, FileOpen blocks access. FileOpen 2.0 includes
a new feature for downloading updated access privileges from the publisher's
Web site, so that publishers can operate a PDF subscription program. As
always, the FileOpen client plug-in is freely distributable, royalty-free
to an unlimited user base.
A Needed Solution for Publishers
Participants in the FileOpen PDF 2.0 Beta Program are already using the
software to solve the long-standing problem of controlling access to digital
content. "FileOpen PDF gives us the ability to protect PDF files, royalty
free. With Windows 95 and 3.1 versions currently available, and Macintosh
on the way, there is no other product on the market that provides a multiplatform
capability. Users of locked files can open them with a simple installation
process, in seconds. Whether it's magazines, books, newsletters, or any
subscription-based products, our customers can finally control distribution
of their important documents," said Mark Czajka, Manager, The One-Off
CD Shops, Washington.
System Requirements and Pricing
FileOpen PDF Publisher, the secure publishing environment, is available
for Windows 95 and NT. The FileOpen client plug-in is currently available
for Windows 95, NT, and 3.x, and a Macintosh PPC version will be available
as a free upgrade to existing FileOpen PDF customers in Q298. FileOpen
PDF is sold for US$2500, including the freely distributable client plug-ins.
